I work at a music venue in San Francisco. At least I did before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down music venues all over the globe.

This novel coronavirus is already fundamentally changing life as we know it. People are losing their jobs and their livelihoods. Many will die lonely deaths.

In light of all this pain and suffering, music might seem frivolous to some. Quite the contrary. Music can be a panacea for our despair, our heartache, and our sense of loss. Musicians sense the weight of this historical moment. They hear the call to soothe people's souls, as much as their own, and they are rising to the occasion by performing live streams. In just the past week, we've seen performances streamed on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, StageIt and Twitch, by artists as diverse as Chris Martin (Coldplay), John Legend, Thee Oh Sees, Rhett Miller, and Norah Jones.
